Remember to secure Wi-Fi enabled devices against intruders

Posted by Thomas Dickson May 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM

If you’re anything like me, you’ve embraced the convenience of smart devices in the home – gone are the days of plugging the computer into the printer or asking friends to tape your favourite shows. Now, a Wi-Fi connection means everything can be done remotely. But have you taken the necessary steps to secure Wi-Fi enabled printers, TVs, game consoles and other domestic devices?

In shocking news last week, a US family revealed its baby monitor had been hacked by an online intruder who gained access by using a default manufacturer’s login. The intruder was able to pan the baby monitor to spy on the family and speak directly to the toddler, raising alarm bells about the security of other devices around the home.

Are you ready for a long weekend indoors with the kids?

Posted by Michelle Rochford April 24, 2014 at 3:00 PM

With the weather taking a cool turn these school holidays, I’m sure most parents are battling to keep the kids entertained indoors. Attention spans are limited and there seems to be a need for a new activity every half an hour, putting the pressure on to develop a full plan.

Though it can be easier to put the kids in front of the TV (as I know all too well), a few traditional indoor colouring-in and craft activities can not only keep the kids entertained, but also fuel their imaginations and creativity.

With Anzac Day upon us, why not turn a ‘crafternoon’ into an opportunity to teach the kids about the historical significance of the day? Anzac Day colouring-in sheets are an affordable, easy and quick option for getting kids involved in the festivities. Essential Kids has downloadable pages of Anzac soldiers and the Anzac Day Commemoration Committee has a whole host of paper-based Anzac Day learning activities.

Working From Home – No Need To Compromise On Print Quality

Posted by Michelle Rochford March 14, 2013 at 11:13 PM

There has been much talk in the media recently about working remotely and productivity. To avoid the wrath of the boss and raised eyebrows from colleagues, those working from home must deliver the same output as they would in their employer’s office environment.

There is a misconception that working remotely means being without the high performance, equipment typically found in a busy office. The good news is, when it comes to printers, some of the advanced features of large office devices are now packed into smaller printers which are within affordable reach of the home office worker.

  • Assess: If you’re looking for a new printer the first step is to identify your needs. Do you need high quality colour fast or will you mostly be printing large volumes in black and white? What about the ability to print double-sided (duplex) or on different sized paper or envelopes? Is an environmentally friendly solution important to you? Do you need to be able to copy, scan and fax as well? Would you like to be able to print wirelessly from your laptop, smartphone or tablet? Make a list of all the features you would like and decide on your budget.
